When we think of a coral reef, we often picture an exotic underwater world filled with vibrant colours and tropical fish. Yet coral reefs are far more than beautiful underwater landscapes.

Although they cover less than 1% of the ocean seabed, coral reefs support around a quarter of all marine biodiversity and provide ecosystem services worth an estimated US$2.7 trillion every year. They protect coastlines from storms, support fisheries, sustain local economies and provide livelihoods for millions of people. But perhaps their greatest value cannot be measured in economic terms. Coral reefs remind us that the balance of nature is what ultimately sustains our own.

When a reef stops functioning, we lose far more than corals. We lose the intricate ecological relationships that make these ecosystems resilient, along with the countless benefits they provide.

And it is not only tropical reefs that are under threat. Deep beneath the surface, many deep coral reefs are disappearing before they have even been fully explored. Rising sea temperatures, pollution, ghost fishing gear and habitat degradation are transforming some of the ocean’s most valuable ecosystems. Yet there is one message that rarely makes the headlines: the ocean can recover.

For decades, conservation focused on protecting what remained intact. Today we know that, while protection is essential, it is not always enough. In ecosystems where damage is severe and coral growth is exceptionally slow, ecological restoration becomes a necessary complement to conservation.

At Coral Soul, restoration is a science-driven process. We work to restore deep Mediterranean coral reefs between 30 and 70 metres below the surface. Every project begins by assessing the ecological condition of the reef, identifying the pressures affecting it and designing restoration strategies tailored to each ecosystem. Restoration is not simply about bringing corals back; it is about rebuilding the ecological processes that allow a reef to function again as a living, resilient ecosystem capable of sustaining itself over time.

Every restoration project reminds us that the ocean responds when it is given the opportunity. Restoration is not a miracle solution, nor can it replace the urgent need to reduce the pressures we place on marine ecosystems. But when combined with effective conservation and management, it becomes a powerful scientific tool that can accelerate the recovery of ecosystems once thought beyond repair.

The benefits extend far beyond the corals themselves. As reefs recover, fish and invertebrates return, habitat complexity increases and biodiversity flourishes. Healthy reefs strengthen small-scale fisheries, enhance opportunities for sustainable tourism, improve resilience to marine heatwaves and invasive species, and create new opportunities for scientific research and environmental education.

Ultimately, restoring coral reefs has never been only about biodiversity. It is about restoring the natural balance that supports healthy oceans, resilient coastal communities and a more sustainable world for us all.

Perhaps, then, this is the real question we should be asking ourselves:
