Climate change is an undeniable reality. Rising temperatures are not only affecting our societies, but triggering invisible, microscopic shifts beneath the waves. A prime example is the alteration of the natural bacterial communities inhabiting the Mediterranean Sea. This marine microbiota plays a vital role in regulating water quality. However, as temperatures soar, the Mediterranean is warming to levels closer to those of subtropical seas. This is a growing concern — not just because native species might disappear, but because it opens the door to unfamiliar marine life.
‘Extreme anxiety on the Mediterranean coast over “flesh-eating” bacteria!’ Headlines like this have recently flooded the media. While undoubtedly sensationalist, they do carry a grain of truth. This notorious ‘flesh-eating bacteria’ is actually Vibrio vulnificus, a marine pathogen that typically infects fish but has the capacity to jump to humans. But where is this media alarm coming from?
This bacterium normally thrives in brackish environments — where fresh water meets the sea. Consequently, it is usually found in coastal lagoons and estuaries where salinity stays below 25 grams of salt per litre. Vibrio vulnificus also loves the warmth, historically calling the tropics and subtropics its home. However, driven by rising water temperatures, scientists have now detected and isolated the bacteria in the Albufera Natural Park in València and, more worryingly, along the nearby Mediterranean coastline. Is public alarm justified?
While rising temperatures certainly work in its favour, the Mediterranean Sea remains exceptionally salty, sitting at around 35 grams per litre. Therefore, while its presence is real, Vibrio vulnificus will exist in much lower proportions than other bacteria perfectly adapted to these waters.
Even so, this does not mean we should ignore basic safety guidelines before taking a dip. If you are in a high-risk group — such as those with liver conditions (cirrhosis or hepatitis), compromised immune systems, or haemochromatosis (excess iron in the blood) — or if you have open wounds or fresh tattoos, it is wise to avoid exposure. This advice stands not just because of Vibrio vulnificus, but to protect against any other bacteria naturally present in the sea.
For the average beachgoer, enjoying the sea remains perfectly safe. While the Mediterranean’s high salinity acts as a natural shield against a widespread outbreak, the presence of Vibrio vulnificus is a stark reminder of how climate change is quietly rewriting the rules of our marine ecosystems. In a warming world, a little extra caution for vulnerable groups is simply a sensible part of adapting to our changing environment.
