World Day for Safety and Health at Work
The digital revolution is transforming every aspect of our lives — and occupational safety and health (OSH) is no exception. Artificial intelligence (AI) and digital tools are increasingly playing a pivotal role in protecting workers and reshaping traditional work environments.
Today, robots are deployed to operate in hazardous conditions, performing tasks like heavy lifting, handling toxic substances, and working in extreme temperatures. These innovations are not just improving efficiency but also safeguarding human workers from serious risks. Meanwhile, smart devices and sensors offer real-time monitoring, detecting hazards early and helping to prevent accidents before they occur. Extended reality (XR) and virtual reality (VR) are also being introduced for immersive training and risk simulations, preparing workers to handle dangerous scenarios safely.
According to a review of the scientific literature on advances in artificial intelligence in occupational health and safety, AI tools enable proactive risk management. In other words, organizations can address emerging hazards more quickly, implement necessary safety measures, and intervene before accidents occur. According to the authors of this research, artificial intelligence offers a promising future and is assigned a central role in promoting a safer and more secure work environment, contributing to the reduction of occupational injury rates.
Another research on the same topic highlights the benefits of integrating AI in occupational health and safety, such as, enhancing safety and productivity through predictive maintenance and real-time risk assessment.
As we celebrate the World Day for Safety and Health at Work, it is clear that the digital transformation offers unprecedented opportunities to create safer, healthier, and more resilient workplaces. Artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies are not just tools for efficiency — they are powerful allies in preventing accidents, protecting workers, and fostering a culture of proactive safety management. However, to fully realize their potential, it is essential for organizations, policymakers, and workers to collaborate in developing ethical, inclusive, and forward-thinking strategies. By embracing innovation while safeguarding human dignity and well-being, we can build a future of work where safety and health are fundamental pillars of sustainable development.
